This album by Anubis Gate started off being sort of bland. You know what I mean? The first song didn’t immediately grab my attention, and I sadly thought that the rest of the album would be that way because sometimes the first track can reflect how the rest of the album will play out, I think. But the second track caught my attention a lot more within the first 10 seconds of it playing. From there on out the rest of the tracks slowly, but surely, grew on me and I came to appreciate the sound of their music. The music had liquid-like grooves, if you know what I’m trying to say. The evident heaviness is surely rooted in older albums done by the band, but with a new sort of origins and uniqueness. “Horizons” also blends 80s rock elements and progressive metal that I assume is influenced by other bands such as Iron Maiden.
I actually didn’t know much about Anubis Gate as a whole before listening to this. I’ve heard a few of their stuff but I’ve never really analyzed and listened to their music intently. When I was over at a cousin’s house on Easter, I mentioned to him about me doing these reviews and that I was going to post this review on Anubis Gate the next day, and he conveniently had the 5 previous albums of the band. He said that I should “give a listen to them before finishing the review.” And I did the night of Easter after everyone had gone home and I had a few hours having some fun with friends. I must say, after hearing all of the albums by Anubis Gate, “Horizons” is by far the best and most mature (if I can use that word) of any of their work. It is such an upgrade from their previous albums and definitely worth a listen to.
