Kilmara – Love Songs and Other Nightmares

20140519-174327-63807384.jpg Even the band’s unique name made my ears prick up! And the  . . . you know. . . eye catcher of an album cover. . . But anyway, Kilmara’s new album of “Love Songs and Other Nightmares” is a short, but well done collection of songs that have an edgy tone to them that sounds great.

Usually songs about relationship break ups and metal bands don’t really mix well, but every once in a while, it turns out good and sounds great (“Stricken” by Disturbed if you want a good example) and Kilmara has made that every once in a while happen right now. “The Break Up” has a good sound to it that I can enjoy very much and find that the tone and rhythm of the song is very well done, and deserves at least some recognition, even though I saw some comments of people saying they didn’t quite enjoy the song. But to hell with them. They aren’t paying enough attention. The opening pulls you in that is followed by guitars and drums that keep a good tempo and beat that sounds good and can be enjoyed by almost anyone anywhere.

“Fantasy” also has such an opening. It starts off very heavy with drums that show no mercy and guitars that are brutal as. The vocals then come in smoothly and not as heavy as the rest of the band, but comes in with a sound that compliments all the other sounds going on at the same time. But as the song progresses, the vocals eventually become more harsh and with “screaming” that then slowly evolves into actual screaming that sounds amazing with the rest of the band, and the rest of the band also keeps up their good work by staying heavy throughout the entire sound while maintaining a great sound and style that is worthy of just about any metal album out there.

“The Devil’s Eye” starts off much like “Fantasy” by bringing heavy guitars and drums to your ears straight from the beginning without faltering for one second. The vocals also keep up a consistent tone that eases its way along with this track. As the songs slowly progresses, it eventually builds up into a guitar solo that sounds amazing. It may not be the most legendary of solos, but it was still great. I don’t care who you are, what you think, or what you say, I like the solo and you can complain about it like a bitch. The remainder of the song is just as good with the vocalist keeping his tempo up and the guitars and drums maintaining a rhythm that is fantastic.

Overall, good album and I can’t wait to dig into more of this band. It makes me salivate (metaphorically) for what they could do in a full length album. Click on the links below to stay updated on Kilmara’s latest events, where they’ll appear at, and all that good stuff that we all love.
