If you were to take the raspy vocals of Lars Goeran Petrov of Entombed, the length of any old Metallica song, the heavy guitars and drums unique to doom and death metal bands alike, and the amazing riffs of Mudvayne, and you’ve got yourself Black Anvil’s new album of “Hail Death”. This whole album, while being great the entire time, was dauntingly long. It;s one of those albums that you look at the full length and you just say, “Damn.” Opening with a nine minute track that starts of soft but then escalates into a brutal piece of work, “Hail Death” takes its tracks from slow going to fast paced and keeping you listening the entire time without becoming uninterested once. The vocals are very raspy and have a sound that is very much like Petrov’s vocals, in my opinion. (And if you don’t know Petrov or his band, he does back-up vocals in Amon Amarth’s “Guardians of Asgaard” if that’s more familiar) To me, those vocals are great and fit very well with this band and its style of music in ways that are amazingly good for the band and the album. The guitars and drums do a great job of keeping up the harsh, unrelenting, brute force of this album while at times keeping it light and controlled, and others making that transition from light to hardcore or visa versa which always sounds good. My favorite track by far was the opening one that was 9 minutes like I said, and had a great intro along with an amazingly coordinated synchronization between vocals, guitars, and drums that never let up and continue into the second track to keep it up and bring more metal along for the ride.
