Overproof Groove – Collect and Readvance

20140714-144508-53108902.jpg When a band I’ve never heard of follows me on Twitter, I typically look at their description because who knows what’s gonna be in there? Could be something I like and want to review or something I don’t find good and not want to do anything with. But there were 3 things in the description of Overproof Groove’s description that peaked my interest. Here’s what it said : “Overproof Groove or OP.G are without a doubt THE #1 Groove metal band in Australia at the moment”. Go ahead. . . take a moment to guess the 3 things. Think you know? Well I’ll tell you anyway. “Groove metal”, “Australia”, and “THE #1” caught my eye. Groove metal? I like groove metal bands, namely 5FDP, Prong, Slipknot. Australia? I’ve had nothing but good things come from Australian metal bands such as Our Last Enemy, A Breach of Silence, and The Amity Affliction. “THE #1”? I’ll be the judge of that.Turns out from what I’ve heard from their latest album “Collect and Readvance” that entire description seems pretty believable.

“Collect and Readvance” is a well done 9-track album that really engages the listener with the music without allowing one second of calm except during the transition between tracks, of course. The vocals have that harsh and upfront sound to them that constantly has the listener engaged. They’re not as deep as Ivan Moody (5FDP vocalist) goes, but they do have that ferocity and nonstop feel of Corey Taylor’s (Slipknot lead vocalist (and I’m saying these because some people don’t know)). The guitars are really hardcore and got that good sound to them that doesn’t let up at all and that’s good because it shows the guitarists are capable of going for extended periods of time and not one of those guitarist that have fast, slow, fast, slow, fast only because they can’t pull it off not because they think it’ll sound good. The drums have that good beat and rhythm that keeps up the whole album and just ticks along no matter what so that there is always a constant beat throughout any track. Overall “Collect and Readvance” is definitely up there in groove metal (Australian groove metal if you wanna go into a more specific category) and they surely have room to improve and get better as a whole. Whenever they release a new album, I’m sure it’ll be better than this because Overpower Groove has nowhere to go but up because I can’t foresee them fucking up their chance to fame among groove metal fans.
