Interview with A Breach of Silence’s Mat Cosgrove

First off, let me thank you and A Breach of Silence for taking time to read all these questions. Love the work so this is a real honor.

  1. “The Darkest Road” was a fucking great album especially the tone and direction you took it. How did you guys come up with that? What is the story behind that?

Thank you.   The tone was something we learnt off the first album.   We had a very good idea what amps and other gear we wanted to use to achieve the tone we wanted.  That being an EVH 111 used as the amp and a peavey 5150 used as the power amp.   The crazy thing about using different amps for power amps you will get a different tone every time then what that amp by itself would do.   We mixed tones up for solo’s and leads as well.   We were able to blend them really well.    We learnt all of this from Fredrik and Henrik who recorded the album from studio fredman.  Those dudes are very smart.   Drums were recorded in a good studio here in Australia and were then mixed over at studio fredman, so we knew we were going to get an amazing drum sound as well.   We really wanted to set ourselves our own tone and sound for the style we are playing, as it will help set our tunes apart.   I guess we wanted a tone where if you heard a song for the first time, you would go, dam that is good.  We wanted the rawness captured in the most professional way possible.   Everything on that album is played.  There is no copy and pasting parts.  Every note was played and sung.

  1. Some people may not know that you’re an Australian band. How’s it been like going from Australia where there are plenty of fantastic artists of all genres to the rest of the world? Even if you haven’t toured internationally (I haven’t look at your schedules if you have any, haha, sorry) what does it feel like to be among the greatest now? Because you certainly are.

Wow, thank you, means the world to us that you are right behind us.  I hope people also get on board with your thinking, and get behind us as well J.  Yup we are from the land down under (Australia), where there are heaps of awesome Artists doing amazing things in the world of music.   So even to be recognized anywhere internationally is a humbling experience.   I really hope the “Darkest Road” puts us on the map around the world.   We are backing this album up with tours in the states this coming fall/winter.  So hopefully the people of the USA find this album awesome and get to a show to support us J.

  1. I’ve told many people about this album already and they’ve checked out the first 2 songs and loved it, and a lot of them have asked me “what do you think they could do more?” By that I imagine they mean what else can you guys do as a metal band? Me, the fans, and no doubt everyone at Eclipse know you’re very talented, but what do you think?

Thank you for helping spread the word.  People getting behind us, is really something we can’t thank you and others enough for.   We are super appreciative that people are checking out the first 2 songs on the pre order. They are really only a taste of what people are going to get off the whole album.  I’m sure you would agree?  If people love those 2 songs well they will absolutely love the entire album.

We are writing more songs right now, and we are evolving each time.  We are certainly not shy of taking risks, as this album is full of them.   We decided to mix things up a bit and really go for broke and show people our sound and our style.  As you are aware, we did a power ballad and another song I won’t elaborate on that I will leave people to make their own minds up about.   But to me the album is a real emotional journey and if people understand that, then they will understand why our tracks are in the order they are and why we did what we did. We want to continue to play to our strengths with Rhys and Blair being so diverse with their vocals.   So I would expect songs that will evolve more and more.  Even though we haven’t really even thought about the next album yet, we really want to continue the path we are on and see where it will go.   Overall I think the dudes in the band are certainly talented, absolutely.   However I don’t think they are any more talented then any other dudes in most other bands.  What really is a glowing light though for the band is we really get our head down and work as hard as we can, so people can hear what we have to offer.

  1. How do you guys as a band feel about the album? I can tell you right now anyone and everyone who’s reviewed it absolutely loves it and that goes for me. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to the album already, haha.

We are so stoked about everything about it.  Very proud.  We are really hoping this album starts to set us apart and gets us on the map internationally.   I hope the good reviews keep flowing in,  it really is a great feeling reading when someone just gets it!   And love the album as much as we do.   What I love about this album is that each song has its own flavor, so it doesn’t get boring and you can keep listening to the album and not get bored.  Well that’s how I feel anyway J.  Chris at eclipse has listened to it more then I have, so at least he thinks the same haha.  Overall though I think this album has really been the stepping stone that we need in our musical careers and will really give fans an identity to connect with.   They will now know what A breach Of Silence is and sounds like.   I hope that people get behind us when we tour the states and hope the media in all forms embrace the album.   We have had haters in the past, so would be interested in seeing what they think as well.  Good or bad,  we learn as we go.

  1. One last question: What have you got to say to the fans out there? I can say with certainty that we all greatly appreciate you guys busting your asses in making a 10 out of 10 album for everyone, and I’m sure they’d love to hear what the creators of this awesome music thinks of them all.

All I can say to the fans out there is thank you for getting behind us, and we hope that this album will make sure you are a fan for life.   We hope new fans come on board and ultimately hope that the “Darkest Road” allow people to take a breath of fresh air with a scene that is over run with the same type of bands over and over again. A breach of Silence really want to thank everyone that has come to a show, bought an album, interviewed us, played us on their radio station, written a review (good or bad), and paid any attention to us.   Everyone that has supported us and will support us really allows us to live a dream we have.  So thank you.

Thanks for reading all this and good luck with touring for “The Darkest Road” and I’ve no doubt release day will be an awesome day for everyone!

Thank you for the time to send us some questions.  Appreciate your support.   J.
