Hardly ever do 100% instrumental albums come across my radar. And even more rarely do I review them (that’s only ever happened once) because they don’t sound interesting to me. But Oecist’s debut album “XVIII LII” (that’s 18 and 52  respectively if you don’t know your Roman numerals) was different. Each of the tracks off of this 5-track EP has a constant tone that’s very atmospheric which makes it sound really nice. Oecist combines many aspects of instrumentalists everywhere into their own music which makes it a very diverse and unique sound even though you can possibly notice the aspects if you pay close enough attention. While I can’t say much more about this EP because that’s all I can really say, I can make the note that (in my own personal opinion) the addition of vocals to this band would make the music even better. They would have to be just the right kind of vocals of course. But if Oecist wants to say “Fuck having a vocalist!” then that’s not a problem in the slightest. They’ll sound good with or without one. “XVIII LII” releases digitally September 1st but you can listen to an exclusive stream of it via echoesanddust.com which (of course!) there is a link below that will take you directly to said stream.
