Dystrophy – Wretched Host

I think anyone who sees that album cover can all immediately agree that this is death metal without a doubt. But it’s not normal death metal, otherwise it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting. While still retaining that feel of old school death metal, Dystrophy brings a 5-string electric violin into the mix. Albeit it’s only heard on the opening and closing tracks, it’s still interesting enough and very unique compared to what you’d hear from a not so unique death metal album. In between those two tracks are beefy and intricate death metal tracks that absolutely destroyed. Brutal vocals mixed … Continue reading Dystrophy – Wretched Host

Ahab – The Boats of The Glen Carrig

There’s nothing like hearing from a band who pioneered a genre of their very own. Much like how Alestorm invented pirate metal and A Breach of Silence tweaked metalcore into powercore, Ahab have transformed their doom metal into a seaworthy subgenre of doom metal: nautic (or nautik) doom. As you might have guessed by the word choice and album cover, Ahab’s new album “The Boats of The Glen Carrig” is heavily influenced by the sea. More specifically, a novel of the same name written by William Hope Hodgson first published in 1907. Regarded as a “survival and adventure story with elements of … Continue reading Ahab – The Boats of The Glen Carrig

Myrkur – M

After Myrkur put out her first album, people who heard it were absolutely ecstatic to hear what else this one-woman band could whip up for a sophomore release. And what she has created is something that will not be forgotten any time soon by fans of Myrkur itself, black metal, or both. Her new upcoming album, simply titled “M” (drops August 21st), is a beautifully elegant 12-track album that is brutal, entrancing, and as hauntingly exquisite as atmospheric black metal gets. Each track off of “M” has their own strengths that have a flawless mix of vocals that range from … Continue reading Myrkur – M

Cities of the Plain – Salt

Instrumental bands have always peaked my interest as they can manage to create an interesting feel and flow while also lacking lyrics which is usually what helps bring everything together and sound better, and Cities of the Plain is one such band. This guy has put out 2 albums previous to his newest, “Salt”, and they were fantastic, and he continues that chain with this being my personal favorite of all his albums by far. “Salt” is a mere 20 minutes long with 5 tracks, but it literally does and is so much more than what so many other bands … Continue reading Cities of the Plain – Salt

Cattle Decapitation – The Anthropocene Extinction

I remember hearing the intro track, “Manufactured Extinct”, off of this album months ago and thinking “I cannot fucking wait for this album!” Thankfully, those words weren’t said with false hope as Cattle Decapitation’s newest album “The Anthropocene Extinction” is more than I could’ve fucking wanted. Ergo, this album is fucking amazing in every sense of the term for any sort of death metal mixed with grind and progressive metal. This album absolutely shreds in just about every single track and it just made my brain melt out of my deafened ears after I played “The Anthropocene Extinction” at least … Continue reading Cattle Decapitation – The Anthropocene Extinction

Malum Sky (self-titled)

Progressive metal has its moments without a doubt with this genre having literally dozens upon dozens of possibilities being newly made with each new progressive metal band, and Malum Sky is no different. Their debut self-titled album is probably the “softest” progressive album that I’ve ever heard, but it still retains its title of being metal with the guitars periodically being heavy amongst the steady beat of the guitars and the vocals which are smooth for the entire album. I wasn’t too keen on the vocals at first, the smoothness of them I didn’t mind, I just wasn’t expecting them … Continue reading Malum Sky (self-titled)

Black Cat Bones – False Promises & Wasted Time

If there was ever a single band to prove that hard rock is still alive and well, it’s Black Cat Bones whose debut album, “False Promises & Wasted Time”, shows that the hard rock scene of the world still has plenty of talent that isn’t ready to stop playing just yet. Black Cat Bones’ album has a real classic hard rock feel and pace to it that persists through all five tracks that are done very, very well as it is just the thing you’d expect to hear from a band wanting to have their music heard. And goddamn it have … Continue reading Black Cat Bones – False Promises & Wasted Time

Siderian – Reduced Aisle (single)

The beginning of band is defined by their first EP, but before that’s released all we have would be the band’s debut single. That’s the case with Siderian and their upcoming debut, “Cancel Your Future”, coming out soon, and all we have to discern of Siderian is their debut single, “Reduced Aisle”. This song is a solid 3 and a half minute track that only shows good things will come of “Cancel Your Future” when it drops as this song has all nine yards. The vocals have an intense black metal screech feel to them that makes them all the … Continue reading Siderian – Reduced Aisle (single)

Shadows of Violence – Rise

Sometimes “heavy metal” is the only term that you can use to describe a band whose music doesn’t belong in any one genre that you can think of. Shadows of Violence is one such band with their upcoming album “Rise” being one of those albums that I can only call heavy metal, and it’s good heavy metal at that. Each song are solid and crunchy tracks that are just what the metal witch doctor ordered as there has been a lack of metal with a real crunch to it that holds promise and literally sounds like it should be played … Continue reading Shadows of Violence – Rise

Behold! The Monolith – Architects of the Void

That is one of those album covers that is so badass that you cannot help but think “I hope the music is the same as the cover” (meaning epic). Stoner metal has always been a genre for me that is never consistent with being good or bad to my ears, and the same thing goes for doom metal, and especially not to mention if they were combined. They’ve both had their moments their, and Behold! The Monolith’s new upcoming album “Architects of the Void” is one of them as this combo of stoner and doom metal is more than anything … Continue reading Behold! The Monolith – Architects of the Void
