I remember hearing the last Tombs album and not being quite pleased with it, but now that I’ve given myself time to develop tastes for different genres I felt it was very appropriate that I check out their new material. Honestly, wasn’t expecting much but now that I’ve heard one of their new songs, “Deceiver”, I can truly say I’m quite excited about this record.
Since developing a liking to the sound of black metal with real atmosphere, I’ve been looking for something that is quick but still implements that whole concept of atmosphere to its full potential. “Deceiver” is just that. From the start there’s an unnerving ambiance that persists to dig its way into your skull to the point where you love it and you can feel something else approaching. That something happens to be a catchy ass set of drums that soon lead to an excellent set of guitars, a bass, and finally vocals that leave nothing behind to create this real awesome black metal feel that is oddly both raw and refined at the same time. What’s really good about “Deceiver” to me is how it’s all a gradual increase and then at the very end everything ends in an instant, leaving you wanting more and more of that you had in the last five minutes of your life. And if that’s not a good indicator that the upcoming album “All Empires Fall” will be really solid then I don’t know what is.
As I said, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot out of this song, but I am so happy that I was proven wrong as I often am. I am fully hyped for “All Empires Fall” now and if you are even interested in post or black metal, then Tombs will have the album for you when this drops.
