After a long days work at the office, nothing is better than coming home and simply unwinding with some quality music. Little is more relaxing to me and instrumental bands help me unwind even more. I’ve listened to plenty of instrumental rock to help me forget the day, but recently I’ve desired something heavier yet still without vocals. As if answering my call, the universe has presented to me Lodo who’s blend of doom and post metal come together to form something that’s absolutely top notch.
The thing that instrumental bands have got to nail in order to keep the listening engaged is that they’ve got to keep the music fresh and interesting. Otherwise, things get old really quick and the listener gets over the music really quickly. Lodo clearly understands that and seems to have taken that greatly into consideration with their self-titled record, and it worked out phenomenally well to no end. This Spanish group really understood the concept with these six songs that serve as a marvelous example of what combining the two heavyweights of doom and post-metal can really create. A set of a bass, double guitars, and drums really created something interesting here as we get a stunning soundscape that few bands can even dream up. The fact that Lodo hasn’t put out much material and then managed to bust out something as tantalizing as this is all but fascinating to me! This piece is immensely intriguing, has plenty of twists and turns to keep any casual listener hooked, a brilliant sense of immersion that makes you feel like you’re falling back into your own little pocket dimension where Lodo is weaving creation before your eyes, and the album shows massive levels of promise for this band which is something that I find endlessly entertaining.
Personally, I always think that instrumental bands deserve way more credit because they have to account for the lack of vocals to keep people hooked, and Lodo is a perfect example of how to do it right. This record is a massive slab of doom peppered with post-metal for extra flavor that results in this amazingly delicious experience the likes of which I’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else, and I’ve confidence in saying that Lodo is only just getting started.
