One realm of metal that has always seemed too far off for me to grasp with my mind is post metal. It’s always just so surreal and so transcendent of the highest variety that hearing an above average piece of the style takes you to a plane like none other. I’m also a fan of innovation, and that’s something that the newly conjured group of Ex Eye has in spades. Their take on post metal is very different from anything I’ve heard, and that helps drive their self-titled debut into previously unfounded territories.

To come out into the world of metal, the very breeding ground of musical innovation, nowadays and come out with something that can definitively be called different by any sort of standard is a feat in it of itself! You gotta stand out quite a bit in order to reach that point, and if Ex Eye does anything with their self-titled debut is stand the fuck out. First off, Ex Eye does a pretty bang up job simply by creating a very interesting post metal sound which is a great accomplishment as I find that style specifically to be quite difficult to craft, taking all things into consideration, and one wrong move can cause the whole foundation to collapse, yet Ex Eye manages to keep things in order while also building upon their splendor even more. With four tracks stretching out over fucking 26 whole minutes, Ex Eye does so instrumentally. Yes, this project is solely instrumental and being helmed from renowned saxophonist Colin Stetson along with a very notable drummer, there’s no wonder why this band turned up such a tasteful debut. The very life essence and backdrop for all of this piece is this stunning sense of surrealism like none other that permeates every single second of what Ex Eye has carefully crafted here.

A record of this caliber would be momentous for any band, but as a debut from respectable musicians, this one is made so much more delicious. If you’re going to want to write down any sort of metal band that has so much talent already demonstrated along with infinite amounts of potential then you better make damn sure that Ex Eye is near the very top of that list, if not at the very top.
