Cloakroom – Time Well

The idea of creating an atmosphere for your music so fucking thick that you could cut it with a knife is a concept that has been around for a very long time with thousands upon thousands of bands trying their hand at doing such. Metal and rock are no exceptions as black metal has hordes of atmospheric based bands that have enjoyed plenty of success, and through many experimentations with rock came the result of shoegaze and thus the birth of bands like Cloakroom for example who take that idea of shoegaze soaked in a rich atmosphere that it’s simply intoxicating to the spirit.

It’s quite difficult to really bring the entirety of a record to be steeped in this incredibly thick layer of sound that permeates every moment of each song to where it all feels like one giant blanket while still remaining diverse enough to where you don’t feel like the entire album feels repeated with each track. That’s precisely what’s happened with the latest piece from American’s Cloakroom, “Time Well”. From the very beginning, we’re thrown into an extremely surreal experience that not only instantly dissolves the world around us but also provides us with a detailed imagination like few others can provide. The instruments craft a misty realm that truly puts the mind into a near meditative state if you allow it to fully take you over, and yet Cloakroom still manage to keep you locked in this realm with their vocals and changing of rhythms that are naught but satisfying to hear. “Time Well” captures the mind and throws us into a real trance that few other bands can present in a half-decent fashion, yet this band reaches across many styles and genres to give us a colorful mixture that’s very intriguing to witness in motion. And once you’ve reached the end of what “Time Well” has to offer, you’re thrown back into this realm of the mundane in an instant with the craving to go back, for Cloakroom has truly sunk its hooks into you and you won’t be let go.

Shoegaze has always been known for approaching things a little bit differently and creating something hypnotic out of doing such, and this interesting album is no exception to that rule. Cloakroom has crafted a record that’s incredibly saturated as well as being excellent for inducing a trance that really lures you into hearing the rest of “Time Well”. Many can do that, but not many can form up a waking lucid dream in their wake to really bring a new sense to the term of psychedelia as well as being tasteful musicians at the same time.

“Time Well” releases on August 18th via Relapse Records!
