Cities of Mars – Temporal Rifts

In my experience, there are fewer things that go well with doom quite like a good level of fuzz added to the mix because not only does it bring an interesting dynamic stylistically it also allows the listener to hear a fresh sound that we simply don’t get a lot of now anymore. It’s got a classic feel to it, and bands that manage to pull it off feel like they’re reaching from the past itself. Cities of Mars is a group that accomplishes such a feat easily, and their upcoming album is no less than a triumph.

The added excellence that comes alongside being a fuzzy doom band is that it’s almost automatically given a psychedelic feel to it that helps bring the tunes to another level, but Cities of Mars took it further with their upcoming piece, “Temporal Rifts”. Not only does the album sport a pretty dope cover art, but the music to easily enrapture any fan of doom who loves it when things are taken slower while still allowing for groovy action to be laid down while also bringing forth delicious riffs that do nothing but hypnotise you as the vocals sooth your passage through the land that “Temporal Rifts” weaves effortlessly. Cities of Mars really managed to not only incorporate what’s nice about psychedelic doom but they still brought a unique flavor to the mix to not just make this album not another example of slow rhythms and flashy mixing in the post production to try and bring a fleshed out experience. Nope! This band knows what they want and they know exactly how to achieve it! That’s something not many people are able to pull off but we see it done wondrously well with “Temporal Rifts” and it’s the kind of shit that’ll give Cities of Mars a devoted cult following.

Psychedelia is something always manages to pull me into a record, but you gotta make it work to create a real experience that actually satisfies and isn’t just needlessly flashy with little to no substance to back it all up. But that’s a far cry from what Cities of Mars did here with this piece. “Temporal Rifts” is a glorious piece that shows the raw talent of this up and coming band that surely has much more to promise beyond even the tastefulness that is this record.

“Temporal Rifts” releases on September 29th!
