Any sort of period of no new material from a band can be quite excruciating for both the band members and fans alike for several obvious reasons on both sides. To go seven whole years without a single new note to be heard can make or break a band’s conviction to being an actual band, yet there are those with such a resolution that a seven-year gap doesn’t budge them one bit. Take Overoth, for example, whose return to the realm of death metal can only be described as wholly triumphant.
A return needs to not only be a service to the fans who’ve stuck around for years on end but also needs to prove that the band in question hasn’t lost their power by any means and can still deliver. I’ve never heard Overoth before hearing this comeback, but I have got a gut feeling that “The Forgotten Tome” easily holds up to previous efforts tremendously so. No less than ten devastating tracks are what Overoth lays before us as we’re taken through a dark dungeon of madness and blood the likes of which only death metal can provide, but “The Forgotten Tome” manages to appeal like few other pieces of the genre. Weaving in gripping rhythms amongst vicious vocals and immaculate use of instruments, Overoth do not disappoint with this record as not only is there a tasteful amount of chaos and death in the mix here but there’s also definite form that, while unsightly to the uninitiated, is all but tantalizing to anyone who enjoys soaking themselves in the living brimstone that records like this spew forth from its maw. “The Forgotten Tome” is not just a pristine death metal record that people like us can only pray for, but it marks the return of a force that the underground needs nowadays, and anyone with half a brain will know that Overoth is not something that should be overlooked for even a fucking second!
Returns are something that I simply can’t get enough of, but there have been too many times where it’s led to naught but disappoint. Luckily, Overoth is anything but a disappoint as their return is fucking amazing in every which way and the power cannot be denied for a second! “The Forgotten Tome” from start to finish is a perfect display of power that couldn’t have gone any better! Death metal doesn’t tend to get more delicious than this, and Overoth certainly knows how to deliver all the way!
