Zaraza – Spasms of Rebirth

The idea of a comeback is one that the common man enjoys very much but is an immense challenge for a band of any genre but metal in particular. A gap of almost 15 years can divide whatever is left of the band’s fan base, but a group that doesn’t pay much attention to a fan base as opposed to continuing their desire to make music is one that truly succeeds above the rest. Zaraza seems to have felt this way, and their return to the realm of sludgy doom metal that they helped carve out the scene to make it what it is today. Their return is all but grossly triumphant, and this record is tantamount to godhood in the vein of sludgy doom.

To come back into the scene with hardly a lick of new material since way back in 2003, you’d think it’d be hard for this Canadian/Ecuadorian duo to try and find their style once again after dealing with that small problem of being on different continents. Yet, despite all odds, Zaraza makes an incredible return with their aptly named third full-length album, “Spasms of Rebirth”, to resurrect a sound that not only helped create the deep cavern that is the world of sludge/doom but also make an album that demonstrates they’ve more talent that dozens of other bands out there while still implementing their unique flavor into a sound that’s been played to death for many years. “Spasms of Rebirth” doesn’t just satisfy in a very hideous manner, but it shows off how Zaraza still has the desire to experiment and weave something out of the darkness to form a grotesquely interesting visage that’s a no short of a warp that we’ve come to expect from the combining of sludge and doom metal. It’s such a dark, haunting image that’s impossible to get out of your skull, and once it begins to infect you it won’t be easily eeked out as it’ll work it’s way back to your very subconscious and leave you wanting more of the abyss that was gashed out to form “Spasms of Rebirth”. Few bands can recreate such a nasty vision of a fucked up pleasure, but Zaraza has done it dastardly well.

Why is it that the most interesting and thought provoking records don’t get that much press and require you to really dig for them? That’s because not every treasure is so easily discovered nor known, and they should be savored because of that, and Zaraza is irrefutable proof of that! The dark creation that is “Spasms of Rebirth” cannot go unnoticed as it uncovers another side of sludge/doom that isn’t visited very often but Zaraza is no less than an expert of the dark realm and they’re our tour guides on this terrific journey of dark pleasure, ghastly amalgamations, and unearthed tomes that should not be read.
