There’s a tricky thing that new bands have to try and conquer in order to get a proper foothold in the world, and it’s nothing more than having a good sound. Sure, that sounds fucking stupid and practically trivial. But if you’re not appealing to any sort of audience then your band isn’t going to grow and no matter how much fun you’re having whilst playing your band will remain small. Bands like Birth of the Monolith face such a challenge, but these Russians met the challenge head-on and didn’t let me down.
While this eponymous debut EP only has three tracks to call its own and therefore only three tracks of Birth of the Monolith to experience, there’s plenty of potential within these notes and amongst what this band has created. The whole of this piece is quite tasteful if I do say so myself, as Birth of the Monolith stretches across multiple styles like death, doom, and post metal to really create a unique feel that not many other groups can say they understand or even pull off, yet by retaining a core of post metal Birth of the Monolith do a very nice job at bringing everything together. Three tracks rarely do much to really get on my good side, yet this debut is a terrific example of how to do just that and I couldn’t be more intrigued by the results. Post metal has never really been one of my more preferred styles of metal, but it has definitely had its moment of glory and Birth of the Monolith is without a doubt one of them. By all accounts, this EP is the very definition of promising and I can see this band growing rapidly in the near future.
Russia has never really been a place where I expect to find quality metal, but the existence of labels like Satanath Records is proof it’s very alive and well in the massive expanse that is Russia. Birth of the Monolith is far from a great act in my opinion, but there’s clear room for potential to take its course and allow this band to become the best it can be. You can really feel that on this EP, and it stands as possibly the best possible entrance that this group could’ve possibly made into the world of metal.
