The late 80s was an absolute breeding ground for all sorts of metal, and grind was one of those that while it never met as much acclaim as death metal, it still made its impact on the masses. And while I’m still all but a stranger to grind, I’m slowly weaving my way through the bayou that is the style and my latest excursion has led me to the force of Haemorrhage. To say that these guys have cemented themselves as the must-hear grind is a massive understatement, and their upcoming album is all the proof one can need.
Right from the get-go of the upcoming opus of blood and gore that is “We Are the Gore” shit gets real! Not only are we almost immediately faced with the blistering grind that Haemorrhage has become known for since the band’s inception in the early 90s, we’re also greeted with a subtle sense of melody that allows the fourteen tracks of “We Are the Gore” to dig its serrated hooks into you even further to where you lose all hope of escape, so now you just gotta ride this train for its entire 33-minute duration with a small hope of coming out alive. With each track that Haemorrhage throws our way, we’re spinning into a ferocious cacophony of intensity and nonstop madness where these grind veterans bring out some of the best that the genre has to offer while still presenting it in a package that a novice to the style like myself can easily settle in. “We Are the Gore” doesn’t once disappoint in the delivery of such a wretched sound that has a truly schizophrenic personality all the way and you’re enraptured in all of it so that by the end not only are you cover in deep lacerations to the bone, suffered several lobotomies, and been subjected to twisted experiments, you’ve been treated with a grind metal experience that takes place in 2017 but teleports us back to the early 90s to show how it’s really fucking done!
For the longest time, a complaint that I’ve heard regarding grind is how “it’s not done like it used to be”, and even though such a comment can apply to all of metal there’s gotta be some merit behind it. And as if to answer such a challenge, Haemorrhage rises up once again to show that grind is far from going out! “We Are the Gore” is a monstrous creation of massive proportions, and it’s brought me one step closer to me being able to say I genuinely enjoy grind as this was a very important step in this journey of mine.
