Primitive Man – Caustic

The more and more that I delve into the haunting realm of noise, the more I become entranced by it. It’s the sort of thing that takes quite an imagination and a strong will to try and achieve. I’ve seen my fair share of bands go specifically for noise and pull it off quite well, but before today I had yet to hear it molded with any sort of metal. Thus, I felt it was finally time for me to investigate Colorado’s renowned trio of Primitive Man with their upcoming sophomore effort, and it is better than anything I was expecting!

Right off the bat, I had high expectations for this band as well as this record because I’ve heard so many great things about this trio that it felt impossible that the talk would all be misleading, right? Thankfully, the words rung true as Primitive Man did not disappoint with their crushing go at a sophomore full-length album, “Caustic”. All of these twelve tracks from a soul-crushing 12-minute grinder to a mind-bending burst of noise that doesn’t last even a fucking minute, and Primitive Man nails it all with the utmost expertise of the darkest variety that really allows the tales of their splendor to create a scorch across the entire world. “Caustic” from the very first second takes no prisoners as you’re thrown in an ever-shrinking room that’s filled with the bones of those long lost whilst an evil voice terrorizes you from all sides, and as your final moments approach you experience a noise that can only be described as other-worldly. The whole of “Caustic” is incredibly sinister with every moment filled to the brim with a nasty sense of horror that always comes in waves, and the expertly executed concoction of sludgy doom only takes thing up a thousand degrees as the vocals fit everything perfectly, the instruments whip together an insidious creation that’s all but claustrophobic, and the atmosphere is no less than incredibly heavy. The one thing I would’ve liked to see with “Caustic” is Primitive Man try to fuse their noise and their metal into one cohesive track as opposed to keeping them separate, but perhaps we’ll see that another time and now we should just bask in the thick ooze that this band has made so deliciously well.

I’m very glad that I ended up checking out Primitive Man after almost two years of hearing great things, and I feel like I couldn’t have picked a better place to start than with this terrifying record. It’s got all you could ask for out of an immensely heavy and therefore disgusting doom album along with the flair of noise that is slowly growing stronger in this world of musical innovation. “Caustic” is by no means a record for the weak of mind, and should you be brave enough to venture into this dark world then you’ll come out a change being.
