Exhumed – Death Revenge

Some bands are simply timeless despite line-up changes, breaks, and a change of styles serving as hurdles for the band to overcome in order to keep their legacy going. That’s precisely what’s happened over the decades for Exhumed, and up to this point in their legendary career, they’ve successfully conquered each and every challenge that’s come their way. Should there have been any doubt to their gory legacy, please turn towards “Death Revenge” and see that these veterans aren’t anywhere near done with the debauchery.

Surely, a record with such a pristine cover art couldn’t be any sort of disappointment, right? Correct! Immediately from the onset, Exhumed make another captivating record that doesn’t become dull over time or even lose its own sense of brutality amongst trying to implement more riffs or allow the chorus to really shine. “Death Revenge” signals the end of a six-year drought from these legends, and the record couldn’t feel any more complete! While also delivering a terrific display of their renowned take on death metal whilst implementing their trademark grind metal sound into the mix to allow “Death Revenge” to become tastefully gruesome for its entire duration. We’re gifted with a scathing 12-track experience that not only consists of skull-crushing riffs brought together by an immaculate set of vocals, a glorious sense of musicianship that you can only see in bands that have been around for decades adorn this fantastic album, and two symphonic pieces create this absolutely haunting atmosphere that fits the metal surprisingly well to truly allow “Death Revenge” to get right under your skin, and then sets the stage for Exhumed to explode outward in spectacular fashion. Only a group as prolific as Exhumed can pull off something so deliciously gruesome as this, and this piece is the sort of thing that time cannot damage and the kind of album that’s bound for greatness.

As Exhumed’s very first concept album, it couldn’t have been pulled off with any more expertise! Based on the grisly true stories of grave robbing in the late 1820s in Edinburgh, Scotland as well as vicious murders done to sell the bodies to anatomists, “Death Revenge” has an incredible sense of dread, horror, and macabre dealings behind its words, and Exhumed makes it immensely entertaining with their special formula of extreme metal. This is one of the more stand-out death metal releases that I’ve heard all fucking year, and even after listening to the record for hours it’s hard for me to say that Exhumed didn’t do a straight up perfect job with the awesomeness that is “Death Revenge”.
