The world of doom metal is one that is always dark and brimming with talent, but you really gotta look for the talent if you wanna hear it. Easily, several great doom metal bands have excellence in their music with obviously high quality sewn throughout their material. Dragged is a great example of that (in my opinion), and I recently came across another band that fit such a description really well. Finland’s Coughdust has returned once again, and the ensuing material is no less that’s tasteful and heavy as fuck.
Typically, one thinks of death or black metal when it comes to the renowned nation of Finland, but Coughdust refuses to let such a trend change their style. Such a heavy variety of doom is by no means a rarity as thousands of groups have done it way before Coughdust, but these guys do things just a tad differently. Whereas throngs of other doom groups keep practically the same tempo for a what can feel like a whole song, Coughdust makes the six tracks of their latest piece, “Worldwrench”, wreathed with subtle riffs that really draw you into that cloud of cosmic dust of that cover art, and such imagery helps bring a psychedelic factor to the metal that elevates the experience even more. Clocking in over 30 minutes, “Worldwrench” is far from the lengthiest doom record that’s been laid down, but Coughdust uses the time extremely wisely to form an overall feel that takes the heaviness in equal parts with hypnotic riffs, psychedelia, and surprising guitar work to make every minute of these six tracks enjoyable. It’s no secret anymore on how to be heavy, but in order for it to work on a record you need style, you need talent, and how need to know how to bring everything to life, and Coughdust is a clear master of such as “Worldwrench” is a terrific display of power and ingenuity.
Ever since I discovered the relatively unknown band of Dragged last year, I’ve been on a slight search for another band that knows how to bring the same elements to the table (without being the same exact thing, of course). Coughdust is easily the closest thing that I’ve found to result in what I’ve been looking for, and I’ve no question that this is but the start for these gentlemen. “Worldwrench” is a magnificent and interesting album that doesn’t know anything outside awesome heaviness, and this band has got talent in absolute spades to carry them throughout the entire record and beyond.
