Iron Monkey – 9-13

Imagine your band not being a thing since the 90s because a member had passed away. That’s a very good yet incredibly tragic reason to end any band, and that’s what happened with Iron Monkey when their original vocalist passed in 1999, but eighteen years later the band has reunited with a new voice to continue on the madness that was brought to a halt before. If you thought their previous material was nihilistic and the essence of agony, you haven’t seen shit yet.

If you saw that cover art and thought that this record was going to be boring to no end as well as being nothing special, then sit your ass right the fuck down and prepare for a truly wild ride! These nine tracks of pure blistering rage are the sort of shit that we need more of because the upcoming piece of chaos that is “9-13” puts the sludge back into sludge metal in ways that so many bands fail to do nowadays. Iron Monkey gives us a real treat that takes us back in time where things we so much more raw and angry, and it seems like nothing has changed behind the scenes as the members of Iron Monkey feel just as angry and fucking malicious drive that they did back when they disbanded. Not a lick of tasteful musicianship has left these guys either as all of these maddening tracks have either ridiculous riffage in the midst of rage, a cohesion that pulls off to the maximum, or a pure sense of hate that amplifies the music even more somehow to create a fiery experience that can’t be put out. All of these things make “9-13” a very potent album of destructive proportions and is naught but pure evidence as to how delectably monstrous Iron Monkey is as a band, and it’s simply infectious as the record closes out.

Imagine the amount of talent that has become forgotten simply because the bands ceased to exist however many years ago. So much potential and awesome material can be brought back, and Iron Monkey is but one example of that talent rising back from the dead and rain hellfire upon us peons in the form of the blasphemous and magnificent “9-13”.
