The glory of doing these reviews for years now is that I’ve been lucky enough to hear hundreds and hundreds of bands from all different types of styles from all walks of life. Continuing to do such has been a full circle in some situations as I find myself revisiting many bands that I’ve checked out before like any music lover. Tonight, this occurred for me yet again and the focus is once again the stylish act of Yellow Eyes who has never disappointed for any of their releases, and this brand new helping is no different.
This band from New York has been an underground force that’s not to be fucked with during recent years. Since the release of “The Desert Mourns”, Yellow Eyes has been consistently going up in terms of style and execution. Each year brings new material from this band, and 2017 is no different as Yellow Eyes has, at the time of this writing, only recently dropped “Immersion Trench Reverie”. Whereas “The Desert Mourns” went for a slightly more atmospheric tone and “Sick With Bloom” really went for the fucking throat while still retaining that Yellow Eyes charm, this album brings a brilliant mixture of both to deliver a punch that’s not only crushing but long-lasting. “Immersion Trench Reverie” brings to the table six tracks that veteran fans of Yellow Eyes will instantly have a connection with as this is the band’s most mature feeling record to date as well as being proof that this trio isn’t settling on putting out the same record again and again. These New Yorkers are bent on improving themselves to provide a better experience with each helping of new material, and it’s clear so far that they’re achieving such a feat with utmost ease! The whole of “Immersion Trench Reverie” is an epic journey through a regal castle to a menacing swamp, and the excellent black metal is executed perfectly to where it’s easy to call this Yellow Eyes’ best work thus far. That’s not the kind of thing I tend to say so boldly, but there’s not much else to say when faced with a piece such as this from a band as talented as this.
Black metal has a good run for every single year as we’re granted terrific albums from all sorts of different bands that know how to truly deliver, and Yellow Eyes has always been one of them and continues to be. “Immersion Trench Reverie” is an album worthy of such a prolific band by fucking miles, and anyone who wants to experience quality black metal that’s executed with mastery absolutely must investigate this release no matter what.
