The absolutely sprawling underground scene of death metal has an absolute ton of positives to it that give unknown bands plenty of cred without being household names. Straight death metal has an immense amount of bands that like to try their hand and because of that we’re granted with tons of underwhelming bands as well as some truly exceptional ones. Wargore is an extremely new act on the scene, but their debut EP proves that of the previous comparison they are undoubtedly the latter.

Death metal is the sort of thing that’s amazingly simple to be lazy with. Countless bands have come together and more or less just created albums that were loud, heavy, and violent without putting much thought into much else. That’s a real downer for people like me who actually enjoy death metal especially when the band in question puts effort into their craft. I feared that Wargore wasn’t going to be anything special, but their debut EP of “Between Evil and Death” is anything but a dull experience. These Brazilians bring together six monstrous pieces of death and murder to create an impeccable first taste of what they have to offer for people like us who seek out only the finest the underground has to offer. Every second of “Between Evil and Death” is an absolute onslaught as one would expect, but Wargore manages to work in hook-filled rhythms and tremendous vocals into their music to not only make the EP an engaging one but also one that’s fun to listen to. Death metal isn’t exactly known for being fun, but it’s the sheer joy of seeing talent like this come right out of the gate for a band is very exciting to me, and every bit o “Between Evil and Death” adds more and more icing on top of a delicious cake of undeath and blood.

It’s always a good thing to hear new death metal, but it’s an amazing thing when that death is incredibly promising with its metal being very tantalizing from start to finish. Wargore has only this piece of material to call its own, but given time and the opportunity to build upon such promise I’m sure that “Between Evil and Death” will be hailed as an unforgettable first step to a band that will surely garner a cult following with subsequent releases.
