Spectral Voice – Eroded Corridors of Unbeing

There’s a very dark side to metal that many people tend to shy away from, even those of us who venture into the more unsightly visions that metal has to offer. The realm I’m talking about is only that’s always wreathed in shadow and has a number of menacing acts that know how to put on quite a performance. It’s inhabited by truly class acts like Howls of Ebb, Blood Incantation, and even noise merchants like MRTVI, but it’s Spectral Voice that is up and coming in this world of black.

You really have to have a special set of flavors in your metal that allows you to enter this dark world as it takes equal parts chaos, imagination, and musical prowess because it’s not an easy task to create an album that’s a true assault on all the senses. The relatively new genre of noise has been a terrific example of that, but the concept still persists metal to the very foundations of many bands. Spectral Voice is one of those acts and their debut full-length album shows that this quartet from Colorado really knows their way around the infamous realm of void and fog. “Eroded Corridors of Unbeing” is an album not for the weak minded or the uninitiated. While there are only five tracks to this effort, the runtime clocks in over 40 minutes to make “Eroded Corridors of Unbeing” a hell of an endeavor to tackle by itself, but Spectral Voice manages to make these tracks truly monstrous to endure as they showcase a brilliant display of a unique style that has its roots in many different styles but the culmination is one of a kind. Even though the most specific people would merely call this a death/doom metal record, there’s so much more to it than a scant three words. Spectral Voice invokes an honest, menacing tone that permeates every single piece of “Eroded Corridors of Unbeing” with malevolence and a creeping sense of death that makes this five pieces of infernal flame an oddly captivating experience.

Not many bands can take malice and an overall foreboding sense and then put it into an album that actually fucking works. It can easily become a clutter much like any other type of music, but Spectral Voice easily shows they know exactly what they’re doing after putting out a number of EPs and splits before this first go at a full-length. “Eroded Corridors of Unbeing” stands alone as the only proof one could need to prove the validity of the excellence behind Spectral Voice. Do not let these guys go unnoticed for long, for they’ll sneak up on you like shadows in the very night before you even realize it.
