Godflesh – Post Self

Throughout the long and adventurous history of metal, there have always been key bands that have carved the way for others to follow and thus create their own style. Much like how Cannibal Corpse carved the way for death metal and Black Sabbath paved the way for metal in general, someone had to be the one to do it for industrial metal and the recent surge of the oddity genre known as noise. While I’m sure there are other groups to credit such, Godflesh has remained a band that must be credited for being a major influence to many, and their revival continues with this new album that shows this band truly knows how to deliver the goods.

Influencing such bands like Drug Honkey is something that can’t be denied, and after hearing several noise acts that were heavily influenced by the work of Godflesh then it’s hard to not see the overarching shadow that Godflesh has cast on the metal world. Yet, their name has become one that’s far from being a household name for the world of metal, and I see them as true underdogs in a way because they’ve managed to come so far and even returned after a hiatus to start the madness once again! “Post Self” isn’t the first piece that Godflesh has put out since being released, but this record shows that this group is still more than capable of busting out material that not only can stand the test of time but also influence a whole new generation of aspiring artists. While I personally find the thirteen tracks (including 3 bonus tracks) of “Post Self” to be a little repetitive and a tad stagnant at times, there’s no denying that this is a terrific example of how talented Godflesh is as they take key elements of the genre that they helped created and even after so many years they still manage to make this album much more entertaining than so many others before it. “Post Self” has the raw power to it that you can really feel as you become hypnotized by the repeating rhythms that draw you into this downward spiral that Godflesh creates effortlessly to make this surreal experience whole and one that fans of a style that hasn’t been done like this in years will instantly gather around.

While I’ve never been a fan of Godflesh by any means, I’ve always greatly respected their influence and power that’s had such a great effect on metal as a whole, but it’s this album that’s making me want to become a loyal follower to this legendary act. “Post Self” has only been released today and has already won the hearts of many, many people, and a simple investigation will show that it’s not hard to see why many are falling head over heels in love with this tasteful piece.
