For many, many decades now, the mastermind of otherworldly horror known as H.P. Lovecraft has been a massive influence on pop culture everywhere from novels to movies to video games to music. There’s no end to the number of bands who’ve come out of the woodwork to provide their own interpretation of Lovecraft’s work, and metal has an absolute plethora of bands trying to do so. Bretus makes a respectable go at the legendary mythos with their newest album, and it’s quite a tasty one.

Busting in with a chilled atmosphere that’s orchestrated by captivating doom, Bretus doesn’t waste time taking the listener to a darker place than one might expect should you not know the inspiration of their latest album, “…From the Twilight Zone”. While I’m not quite sure what piece(s) in particular Bretus draws from in order to create this album, but whatever it is the execution and sound of it all being brought together undoubtedly does the inspiring material justice. “…From the Twilight Zone” really calls forth from another primordial realm delicious riffs and tantalizing musicianship that not many doom fans will be able to resist simply because of how tasty the instruments are as they’re being narrated by the vocals that fit incredibly well. And from the beginning to the very end of these seven tracks it’s very clear that Bretus are not only passionate about their music and all things Lovecraftian but also molding them together into one cohesive experience that can truly be considered an accurate representation of the legendary works. That allows the whole of “…From the Twilight Zone” to be a very fun experience because you can tell the band is doing what they love, and add that on top of a very pleasing performance and you’ve got a very enjoyable record by all standards.

I’ve yet to really dive into the world of Lovecraft but through bands like Bretus I and people like myself can catch a glimpse of what is awaiting us. Mysterious dark figures in a constant gloom outside the very universe yet always with us. “…From the Twilight Zone” is a piece that from beginning to end pays great homage to a 20th-century mastermind and an act that you should be damned sure to keep an eye out for.
