Out in the void that metal can tend to inhabit lies a zone that not many know about and even fewer dare to venture towards. It’s one that’s perpetually black and one that always seems to continue growing and the deeper you go the further you are from returning. It’s a place that metal has been known to go to, but there are a few select acts that do it with such expertise that it’s almost unbelievable. Nortt has been lying dormant for 10 years, and with his return, he brings a plague that’s infectious and intoxicating.
Think of the phrase “when you stare long into the abyss the abyss stares back at you” when referring to all that Nortt has conjured from the black depths over his illustrious career that is sadly underrated. Not many acts can survive a ten-year silence much less make a solid effort at bouncing back, but Nortt makes it look like the easiest thing you’ve ever fucking seen with the blackened opus of “Endeligt”. Busting out from absolutely fucking nowhere, Nortt makes a triumphant return with a bone-chilling set of nine tracks that really know how to cut deep and leave scars that aren’t only venomous but also the kind of blade that eviscerates all it touches. “Endeligt” masterfully combines the realms of black metal and funeral doom in a very artistic way that leads to a unique sound that has loads of atmospheric elements to it that enables “Endeligt” to become a wholly haunting experience that’s all but mind bendingly terrifying. Every one of these nine tracks come together to form an experience that’s not only bleak in terms of the album’s themes, but also emotionally as the more you go into “Endeligt” the more your spirit will be weighed down and the more you’ll drift back into the abyss that Nortt has navigated for so long. Many bands have accomplished a very similar feat, but Nortt’s unique vision is one that is leagues above the competition.
The scene has always felt like it needed something menacing to really kick every other act right in the fucking nuts, and the comeback of Nortt is something that easily does such a feat. “Endeligt” has power, terror, and excellence to back its content in absolute spades to make it a definite last stop that must be made for quality metal in 2017.
