Lord Buffalo – s/t

Long has the desert been a source of fixation for me. I’m not quite sure what it is but there’s an odd sense of calm that the dry landscape that I’m always enthralled by, and when that place meets metal or rock it creates something special. Desert rock is by far not a new thing, but it’s still ceaselessly entertaining to me to explore such a tasteful style. I stumbled across Lord Buffalo not expecting much, but what I got was something so special that I still can’t believe it.

When I started listening to “Lord Buffalo”, I thought that I was in for some stoner jams as I got drawn in by that bass tone from the very beginning. Yet, what I got was something quite different. With their first go at a full-length, Lord Buffalo takes desert rock to places that I’ve always wanted to go to but never knew existed. Imagine the style steering away from the riffs and the stoner attitude to adopt a more psychedelic overtone while adding in special instruments that breathe new life unto the rocky landscape that we explore. Lord Buffalo puts together a unique experience that shows the mysticism in lying amongst the shrubbery to feel the dry heat, look up at the clouds that dot the sky, and touch the heated rock beneath your hands. All of that is brought to life through these trippy guitars and bass, drums that entrance you for the entirety of the album, vocals that make you fly high amongst the dirt, and a brilliant atmosphere that permeates every inch of this record to give you a colorful tour of the desert you never knew you wanted. Psychedelia and the sand have come together before, but Lord Buffalo makes it look like art with this piece. It’s an album that shows true talent within this Texan band and the kind that can truly become something monumental in time.

Desert rock has never been more tantalizing than with this album. This band has made something truly special for their craft in such a way that easily separates them apart from the rest of the crowd. It’s wholly satisfying and something that I can definitely find myself immersed in for many weeks to come. Lord Buffalo has done an unbelievable job here, and I can’t encourage anyone enough to go where the tall grass grows and where the sun stands at its highest. For there, you’ll find a one of a kind bliss.
