Australia has always been a place that I’ve associated with having a very rich metal scene that’s constantly impressing me. It’s not only rich in talent but also in diversity as you can find dozens of bands for each potential style of music in the country and just about all of them are delectable! Up until now, I’ve yet to hear Australians take on post-metal, but Hawkmoth has changed that with their upcoming album of instrumentalism that’s all but incredibly immersive!
Right from the get-go, it’s easy to see that Hawkmoth isn’t doing the casual doom technique of weaving together stoner riffs to allow an easy entrance, but instead immediately taking you to a unique landscape that’s constantly being hewn into by the transcendent metal that propels “Godless Summit”. Four tracks await the listener to take you someplace truly unique as Hawkmoth’s brand of instrumentalism is pristine to where you get the best of both doom and post-metal. Hence, we’re given a record that’s able to bring forth the heaviness and hopelessness that doom invokes while the post-metal throws down light senses of psychedelia that brings “Godless Summit” to a peak of the senses that’s all but truly immersive as you can feel the ebb and flow of what Hawkmoth is doing here in exquisite detail. The guitars flow like water, the bass has a terrific backing tone and the drums drone on to put the cherry right on top of this delicious album that shows you a surreal environment that’s all but a joy to be a part of. “Godless Summit” is far from something new stylistically or ground-breaking, but damn if Hawkmoth doesn’t make an excellent record that really satisfies all the sense. Many bands can have choice moments of awesomeness, but Hawkmoth manages to make that last an entire album.
Did I mention that “Godless Summit” is the first part of a two-part opus? No? Well, time to look forward to that in the new year! Hawkmoth has delivered a special blend of doom and post-metal in a way that I never could’ve seen coming, and the entire album is all but tantalizing. Should you want to see what Australia can still do in ways you weren’t expecting, “Godless Summit” is another terrific stop that must be made.
“Godless Summit” releases on December 14th via Black Bow Records!
