The Discordant – Safe Haven

I’ve always been a massive fan of music that really feels like it can take you someplace different. When the music can bring you at ease by its atmosphere alone while the rest brings you into an immersive experience that’s all but delicious, that’s a great thing on a whole other level. That’s precisely the case with the debut EP from The Discordant as this one-man band shows that post-rock can be done in ways that everyone could easily call mesmerizing.

A scant five tracks are what we get with the first effort from The Discordant, “Safe Haven”, and that’s really all we need in order to see that the man behind this act truly knows what he’s doing when it comes down to creating quality post-rock. While not refraining from being more bombastic when it comes to sound and overall design, The Discordant takes a familiar route with “Safe Haven” by making the EP purely instrumental to really allow the music to form a unique vision in the brain of each and every listener. From that alone, “Safe Haven” is a very solid effort that shows a lot but taking everything in shows that The Discordant is something that many post-rock fanatics can easily gather around. The EP has pretty much got it all from the calm moments on introspective reflection to the more complex instrumentation that becomes the very life force of “Safe Haven” at key moments to really like the EP breathe and feel much more organic as a piece of music. In that regard, The Discordant shows a real knowledge of the style in a way that doesn’t need much improvement but can still be built upon to create something truly interesting.

The Discordant really allows everything to come together very nicely in a way that makes this debut stand out from the rest of the crowd that can easily become bogged down in their own pretentiousness. “Safe Haven” is a terrific display of post-rock done in a way that’s quite tantalizing and only enhanced further with brilliantly executed instrumentalism.
