After hearing so much new metal in the last few years for me, I’ve naturally noticed some trends with some being more preferred than others for one reason or another. One that I noticed is how a lot of smaller bands don’t tend to separate themselves from the rest without creating their own island. Sure, plenty have, but not enough in my opinion. I love seeing bands take matters into their own hands to create music they love while still performing the sounds that have influenced them greatly, so stumbling upon Gürschach and seeing that exact thing was a late Christmas gift in it of itself.
The basis that Gürschach makes their music from is to create material that’s a fair amount of experimental elements going into their metal, but it’s nothing crazy as Gürschach stays on the side of creating music that’s very approachable and not so monumentally different that it’s all but a challenge to listen to. Instead, their latest album of “Dark Matter” simply keeps things interesting by making each of the ten tracks having their own personalities down to the very rhythms along with having their own flavors that allows Gürschach to bring in different stylistic elements from one song to the next. Not many bands have the creative drives to do such a thing, but Gürschach nails it perfectly with “Dark Matter” in such splendid fashion that ultimately shows off true knowledge in music making as well as having a real understanding of how to create enjoyable songs that the listener can come back to time and again with a quality experience being all but guaranteed. From start to finish, “Dark Matter” is nothing to scoff at as it’s made up of plenty of anthems, tasty melodies, a seriously delicious sense of what to do at the perfect time for a satisfying listen, and keeping things interesting in the most tasteful ways.
All that comes together seamlessly to really set Gürschach apart from the rest in a glorious way to enable “Dark Matter” to become just another “meh” album you can randomly come across on Bandcamp. Instead, the album is entertaining to the very end and Gürschach shows that not only can they produce a quality album, but they’ve the talent and passion to keep creating new records and I can only hope that we’ll see more from this exceptional band in the future.
