Humanity’s End – Between Life and Death

The plight of every new band in the world of metal can be viewed as many different things culminating in an absolute mountain of annoyances and headaches to overcome in order to get your music to the people. Death metal is no different, and making your sound impactful in such a jaded style is key. You want to make it have plenty of emphasis on its power rather than merely copy-paste the sound of countless others. Humanity’s End luckily avoids such a problem with their debut EP, and it’s a very good step in the right direction for a fresh band.

Humanity’s End still has that brand new band smell as this two-man group was creating only last year, and to cap the year off they celebrated by releasing their debut EP, “Between Life and Death”. In all seriousness, this band doesn’t really do anything monstrously different to set themselves apart from the rest of the vastly populated scene of death metal, but what they lack for in overall originality they easily make up for it in tasteful execution. All five tracks we’re gifted with “Between Life and Death” are quite typical for a death metal record, but Humanity’s End manages to sew in plenty of melodies, kickass solos, and an overall attitude that doesn’t know when to lighten up as the whole of this debut is an absolute assault upon the ears as the listener is thrown into a chaotic world of bloodied steel. And this band doesn’t stop at a fairly basic death metal formula, no – they’re not afraid to switch the game up, make an unexpected left turn, and bring in a new element or two that really shows you what Humanity’s End can do here, and “Between Life and Death” is a brilliant vessel for that.

Debut albums/EPs/whatever have always been a real gamble as we as listeners truly don’t know what we’re getting into as the band typically don’t have any previous material to fall back on (in this case only a few covers), and I had many doubts about Humanity’s End before diving in. Luckily, “Between Life and Death” was incredibly kind to me and I can happily say that this a death metal act to keep an eye on, and maybe they’ll surprise us. Never know.
