Genocide Pact – Order of Torment

Much like traditional heavy metal, one of my favorite things about death metal as a whole is how it’s remained relatively unchanged for well over twenty years at this point despite millions of attempts. It’s a great thing that has led to many great albums from exceptional bands, and that trend only continues with glorious acts like Genocide Pact gracing us with modern death metal laden with callbacks to classic materials from the greats. Never heard of this band? Then prepare to be trampled and amazed!

When looking for mass chaos and corruption, where do you look? Washington D.C., of course! Genocide Pact hails from the historic capital of America with a heap of scathing death that’s more chaotic and ridden with death than any politician could ever dish out in the city. But while their upcoming album of “Order of Torment” is definitely chaos to the very bone, it’s the controlled aspect to it that really shows that Genocide Pact has a true understanding of what kind of death metal they’re going for. All too many bands let the intensity get out of hand without giving it proper form first, but Genocide Pact does it wondrously to present to us eight tracks of bone-crushing riffs, fiery vocals, and rhythms that are the very doldrums of many doomed souls. “Order of Torment” from start to finish is a brilliant display of what modern death metal can achieve as it’s got everything a person could ever ask of death metal. Not only does Genocide Pact blaze ahead with their special brand of death, they know how to respect those who came before them by adhering to many tropes that made the genre great in the first place, and it’s all that which helps “Order of Torment” become not only a mammoth piece but also an absolute joy to listen to!

Very rarely does it feel like a band is having fun whilst playing death metal because of the imagery and corpses and all that, but Genocide Pact genuinely makes their sophomore full-length sound like the members are having a grand old time playing such crushing material. “Order of Torment” is possibly the first great death metal album of 2018, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it stayed that way for the rest of the year.
