There are many, many bands that have graced the unholy territory of black metal from names like Darkthrone, Dark Funeral, and Mayhem being household names for any fan of the genre simply because of their greatness and contribution to the genre as a whole. If Abigor hasn’t been considered to be among such greats, they absolutely should be! Going for 25 years overall, this group has always laid firm in the darkest depths of black metal and their latest record is the exact thing reminds us why the genre is so damned good and so infamous in one fell swoop.
From the very classic days of black metal, it’s been unholiness and a raw, seething rage that’s always made the genre such a fucking treat for anyone brave enough to endure the onslaught. Often, we’re treated to great material that is everything the black flame can and should be, and acts like Abigor that keep such a flame alive by creating albums like “Höllenzwang (Chronicles of Perdition)” to keep the flame strong and fierce. Right from the very beginning, Abigor makes it clear that their very thick themes of occultism and Satanic topics are a key factor in their metal, and it makes the sheer ferocity and ferocious attack upon the senses one that’s all but essential for any fan of black metal. The vocals, wicked strings, unholy beats, and monstrous talent that’s on display with “Höllenzwang (Chronicles of Perdition)” shows that even well after their initial efforts Abigor still has got the touch of darkness in them and it’s not likely to disappear anytime soon. I firmly believe that this is some of Abigor’s best work to date, and if it doesn’t bring that band even more acclaim and praise that they so rightfully deserve by this point then that’s no less than absolutely criminal.
For years, Abigor has long been an underdog in the world of black metal, and I’ve always felt that it could be but one album that could change that for better for this band. I’ve faith that “Höllenzwang (Chronicles of Perdition)” is precisely that album as it shows everything great that Abigor does for black metal and the simple true fact that they are keeping the original flame burning incredibly bright with every single piece of material that they put out.
