Scolos – Infinite Recursion

It’s very clear that a band’s first steps as an act can show a lot about what the band is about to get themselves into as well as what we can expect to see in the future should they stay together. Sure, it can lead in just about any direction from a debut EP, but the first step tends to be the most important and I love seeing bands take such a step. Scolos has done just that with their debut EP, and from the sound if it I can say that this is some filth that can and will surely spread to become a full-on infestation.

The idea of bringing together black and death metal is far from a unique idea by today’s standards, but it’s going to be a long time if it’ll ever lose its luster as we’re given bands like Scolos that release material that’s not only true to the raw roots of the style but also bringing in a few different elements to make things extra dirty for those of us who can’t get enough. With “Infinite Recursion”, we’re treating to four scathing tracks of blackened death that are incredibly organic for a debut EP that also shows that Scolos knows exactly what they’re fucking doing. The incredible power and raw fury that we can see with “Infinite Recursion” is something that we can see from the entirety of the genre, but Scolos manages to toss in some elements of grind to make the four samplings even more ferocious to the very end as no stone is left unturned and no survivors are left with a debut that shows plenty of potential. “Infinite Recursion” leaves little room for relaxation, and thus Scolos produces a debut that’s not only befitting of the genre but also an absolute rager that doesn’t want to go out with a whisper.

I’ve heard many, many debuts with these reviews and with that I’ve seen plenty of exceptional acts be born. Scolos can easily become one such group if they play their cards right, and I know that if “Infinite Recursion” reaches the right crowd that Scolos will have quite the devoted following. Hopefully, they’ll have new material out by the end of the year…
