One of the styles that undoubtedly helped me get into metal in the first place is ironically on that I don’t visit very often nowadays: metalcore. It’s a highly scrutinized style amongst the metal community, but like everything, it has its own audience and thus bands that go on to carry the sound forward. A long time has passed since I heard a tasteful piece from the style, and the universe has brought Structural Repairs to me whose debut is a solid slab of metalcore that shows that even Brazil knows how to do it right.
Metalcore hasn’t gone through much of a change ever since its invention, and if you ask me that’s perfectly fine as it’s possibly the newest style in metal that’s become popular so seeing bands just churn out practically the same formula is equal parts understandable, odd, and sometimes irritating. Change can be a good thing, but sometimes a band can just nail it with the original formula. Structural Repairs is a great example of such as their debut effort, “We Choose Violence”, is a by the books EP of metalcore that doesn’t know how to lay up on the intensity and also knows how to pack one hell of a punch. The four tracks that “We Choose Violence” doesn’t have much in terms of variety, but Structural Repairs easily makes up for it with their bombastic energy and destructive attitude that kicks you right in the fucking balls as this debut is a brilliant entrance to show that these Brazilians are true to the way of metalcore, and they’re not here to fuck around. It all comes together to create a very volatile EP that really shows that metalcore still has plenty of power to its name, and Structural Repairs takes their craft very seriously, and that allows for a sense of professionalism to come forth through these four tracks that somehow make them even tastier despite this being a debut.
Metalcore has and always will garner a large amount of discrimination no matter who says what, but as far as I’m concerned it’s like every other style: it has its ups and downs. Structural Repairs shows the style has even reached to places like Brazil, and with quality, no less. “We Choose Violence” is a solid entrance and hopefully a good sign as to what we can come to expect from this band which I’ll definitely be keeping a loose eye on.
