Strike Avenue – Human Golgotha

Despite having no sort of distaste or special disinterest towards deathcore, I rarely seek it out whenever I do these reviews. I’ve found tons of joy out of bands like We Rise the Tides and Carnifex, but it’s just a weird turnout of life that I don’t seek it out as much as death, black or doom metal. This time, though, with Strike Avenue, I decided to dive back into the realm of deathcore to refresh both my palette and my views of the genre as a whole. Luckily, this record provided a familiar set of flavors that I found all but refreshing to my ears.

In no way do I not understand some of the sneers and remarks that deathcore as a whole, but like many things, it can be blown out of proportion. Without going too far into the matter of other people’s opinions, I always took everything in moderation. I know that if I dive head-first into the genre that I’d get bored of it very quickly, so I stagger my progress with exceptional bands like Strike Avenue and their exceptional new album, “Human Golgotha”, to keep my interest in the style both ripe and at a safe level. With its unyielding power and unorthodox work of the fretboard, “Human Golgotha” sticks to the classic tropes of deathcore while still allowing Strike Avenue to have their own special flavor that allows them to set themselves apart from the rest if only but a little. The 35-minute runtime is incredibly fitting as it really enables “Human Golgotha” to show us plenty of what this band has to offer, and if you’re into deathcore even a little bit it’s nothing to scoff at. Strike Avenue shows definite aptitude when it comes down to a volatile musicianship as well as organic musicianship that gives “Human Golgotha” a very unique pulse that is quite alluring if locked onto.

Granted, deathcore will remain one of those styles that will always have great scrutiny from the metal community as a whole, it will always be another style for me to forage through even if at a snail’s pace. In no shortage, “Human Golgotha” is an important step for me in understanding deathcore in the end, and I’ve no doubt that Strike Avenue will find a loyal following with this hard-hitting record.
