The beauty of modern day black metal is how easily you can mold it given how black metal has the most diversity amongst all metal which is already the most diverse genre in all of music. A band can simply do a singular style, but a group that manages to bring things together in a massive performance to really bring glory to the style is something we don’t get enough of. Coming back from ten years of silence, Gontyna Kry shows what it means to bring a black metal record that’s not only organic but monolithic in every regard.
As you could imagine, coming off of a decade long gap of no new material whatsoever isn’t exactly what people could call a “small obstacle” when it comes to the band’s overall career. It’s something that only a few bands can withstand, but the underground holds many surprises. I wasn’t expecting much with what Gontyna Kry seemed to be offering with “Ignipoten”, but like many things I am happy that I’ve been proven wrong. Gontyna Kry returns with a stellar set of twelve tracks of challenging black metal that takes influences from all over and has a sound that’s very technical in nature but at many times it’s capable of becoming symphonic (particular in the interludes) to really allow “Ignipoten” to stand out on its own. It doesn’t rely on any singular thing to keep its content entertaining and worthwhile, but instead go for a more complex approach that enables “Ignipoten” to breathe, gives Gontyna Kry the chance to show the past ten years weren’t just spent doing fuck all, and gives the listener a glorious demonstration at how to create black metal that’s somehow methodical, technical, and surpassing all kinds of excellence that many bands can only dream of.
Where many people may have gone the last decade without even knowing the name of Gontyna Kry (I’m certainly one of them) it is with the release of “Ignipoten” that people should become acquainted with the name and do some back tracking. Gontyna Kry does a terrific job with virtually no flaws with this record, and it couldn’t be a more successful comeback! Should this record fall into the right hands and onto the right ears, there’s no doubt that Gontyna Kry will get the recognition that their years of hard work have made them earn.
