A lot of the time whenever people think of old school black metal I’ve seen them refer to the very melodic stuff that isn’t afraid to go from one direction to the next, and also be raw yet ritualistic in a unique sense. I’ve very rarely seen it pulled off in such a way that I can honestly say I enjoyed to the fullest, but every time I find out it’s literally fucking amazing. Gyre of Incandescents may not have been going for a classic sound, but they achieved it with their upcoming eponymous piece that will come over you like waves upon the shore.
Atmospheric material is something that’s extremely common in today’s black metal climate simply because the genre makes for such a good thing when you make it overflowing with atmosphere and go from there. But sometimes, it can be achieved accidentally depending on the overall sound quality by the end of the record making process. I don’t believe that Gyre of Incandescents was going for an atmospheric sound with their self-titled slab, but the raw nature and ritualistic tendencies that these four tracks have to allow for the piece to become quite atmospheric at times, and it’s absolutely delicious! Toss in loads of melody into an already volatile mixture and you’ve got a fiery flavor that doesn’t know when to quit! Gyre of Incandescents truly hit the nail right on the head at every opportunity they had as this record has got everything from rough but meaty vocals, fuzzy strings that have an amazing classic feel to them, a pulsating set of drums that carries the record, and a purely grand sense of musicianship that ties all these lengthy tracks together beautifully! Very few bands manage to bring together so many different things together and actually succeed to do it to great effect (last time I saw it done this potent was Mork two years ago), but Gyre of Incandescents shows off with no less than pure mastery that they know how to deliver a magnificent album and we couldn’t have asked for a better taste of what this act is capable of!
Gyre of Incandescents created a truly stunning piece of dissonant melodic black metal that’s so much more than those four simple words, and it’s the sort of material that I can, and will, eat up over and over again! In no small regard, this band has made an album that I’ll be crawling back to so many times and I’ve no doubt other people will follow suit. Gyre of Incandescents has done what’s rarely executed, and it’s the kind of shit that will bring this band plenty of well-deserved recognition.
