MuN – Opia

The void is a place that a lot of music tends to find itself in, and many times in black metal who embraces the darkness and dares to carve out recesses even darker and even more sinister than we could ever imagine. But there’s another side to it, one that flies amongst the stars and delights in the beauty of supernovas and frollicks from one planet to the next. Space rock is something that is very enjoyable but a talented band can bring true character to. MuN is definitely one such band, and their new album is a for sure the soundtrack for any space-traveler.

There are plenty of space rock bands out there, but the search for high-quality acts of the style can sometimes feel like searching for life on other planets. Yet, when you find that one gem in a far-off solar system you know it immediately, and I was able to tell right away with MuN that I found something special. Five tracks aren’t much to work with, but “Opia” makes them work like a charm as every single one of them has the flavor, character, and beauty to engage you in ways that only the vastness of space could embody. And while the vocals are clearly there are they convey poignant lyrics regarding to the answers to life’s questions and the exploration of the great unknown, they have a very ethereal feel to them that puts them in the background somewhat, and that enhances the experience by making it feel more psychedelic in nature. Then, one by one, “Opia” demonstrates even more incredible strengths from the consuming riffs to the brilliant etherealism to the grand instrumentation that, when all brought together, makes for a very tasty record that space rock can always use more of.

MuN shows with their sophomore effort that they aren’t fucking around for even a second, and it’s an album that I’ll always delight with immersing myself in. In every form, “Opia” is a sheer joy to listen to and I’ve no doubt that MuN is only just beginning with their grand trip through the cosmos.
