Duos are always somewhat of a spectacle in my mind as I find it endlessly entertaining to see what two guys can make work when it’d simply be easier to get more people and spread out the workload. It means that one person takes on multiple different parts of the band and its sound, and it can always result in varying degrees of success. Eagle Twin has quietly become more and more of a cult classic since their debut nine years ago, and their latest record shows they truly have become a doom band that must be heard.
Easily, the thing that drew me into “The Thundering Heard” was the longer tracks as I’m a real sucker for those, but that doesn’t always mean they’re good by any means. It just means the band in question has the balls to really go for a longer runtime that dares to challenge the attention span of the listener, and Eagle Twin was able to deliver with this album, thankfully. What these four tracks lack in quantity, it’s made up for greatly so in the areas of heaviness, down-and-dirtiness, and sheer quality that it’s impossible not to feast upon the amazingly crunchy metal that “The Thundering Heard” creates with utmost ease. But then it’s the crazy ups and downs that Eagle Twin manages to bring to the table with their phenomenal riffs and impeccable musicianship that all comes together like the flow of a river to create an overall sound that’s not only fantastically crushing but also satisfying to the very end. There’s quite literally no stone left unturned here as “The Thundering Heard” is an album that truly left no stone unturned as Eagle Twin went all out with this record, and the result was something no less than absolutely fabulous from start to finish.
It’s often for duos to eventually bring in another member to the band to make things more efficient, but going for almost a decade is quite a feat and that’s exactly the case with Eagle Twin as these guys are still as much of a doom powerhouse today as they were day one. “The Thundering Heard” is a tremendous album from front to back, and I’ve no doubt it will spread like wildfire throughout the global doom community just by word of mouth if it hasn’t already.
