The Howling Eye – Sonorous

There’s a certain flavor that I certainly can’t get enough of whenever I’m referring to some tasty doom or rock that really grips me from start to finish. It’s a very specific thing but extremely hard to execute properly: psychedelia. Even incorporating it just a little can prove to be daunting if you don’t know how to make it work, but that doesn’t stop throngs of acts from trying their hand at it. The Howling Eye isn’t the most recent band to do it, but their brand new album of “Sonorous” is certainly one of the more recent examples of how to do it right!

Just looking at that trippy cover art should give you a good idea as to what you’re getting into when you go to dive into “Sonorous”, but don’t let it fool you. I’m not about to say that The Howling Eye has crafted a masterpiece of an album, but there’s no denying whatsoever that this Polish trio has managed to create an album that brings together doom metal, stoner rock, space rock, and practically every associated style that you can think of, yet The Howling Eye refuses to let “Sonorous” become another tedious effort at worshipping weed apart from the final track. But by the time you reach the final track, you’ve been through an exceedingly delicious four songs that truly allow “Sonorous” to be a cohesive piece from its tantalizing riffs to its indulging psychedelia that merges perfectly one time after another. That’s something that produces no less than a euphoric sense of bewilderment for anyone like me that loves something that’s equal parts crunchy, groovy, and trippy which is an extremely hard formula to get right on any occasion.

From front to back, “Sonorous” shows off the talent behind The Howling Eye in brilliant detail as these guys display a grand sense of understanding their style when compared to their debut that was just over a year ago. Many bands take much longer to get their heads in the right space, but this band did is astonishingly fast to exquisite results! “Sonorous” is one hell of a rollercoaster of the genre and one that I can’t help but suggest to any fan who wants a trip that’s simply dripping in both psychedelia and riffs for days.
