Kissin’ Dynamite – Ecstasy

In today’s modern state of metal, innovation is all but rampant and it doesn’t take an eagle-eyed fan to see that. Metal is easily the genre with the most amount of varying styles and sounds to where it appears there’s always something new being created, but we also have a very large amount of bands that constantly call back to the classic era where the line between rock and heavy metal was blurred. Kissin’ Dynamite is a true flashback to that era, and their new album is a glorious worship of the attitude and sound of the time.

It’s hard to balance yourself between having an old school sound and having a wholly cookie-cutter formula at play whenever you’re a band that emulates that of a classic sound or band or whatever. Many bands fail as they don’t manage to bring their own flavors into the mix and end up just being bland or even sounding completely mediocre. In the case of Kissin’ Dynamite, though, this band manages to find that glorious sweet spot with “Ecstasy” along with their tremendous and catchy brand of heavy rock flair that strides the very fine line between hard rock and classic heavy metal. And while the basic formula of “Ecstasy” remains virtually unchanged with the variations between songs being enough to carry the album forward without fail, it’s the slightly cheesy and classic attitude, energy, and execution that’s reminiscent of classic leather-clad, motorcycle riding heavy metal. The image and the sound both come together to paint a glorious visage of a real classic art that we simply don’t see a lot, and I’m nigh on impressed that Kissin’ Dynamite has been able to replicate it so well.

Many could sneer and give shit to “Ecstasy” as well as Kissin’ Dynamite for not doing anything original and being very cheesy, but there is not a damn thing wrong with that. If it’s good cheese, and this certainly is a delicious variety, then it succeeds in doing whatever the band set out to do with the style of the record. Kissin’ Dynamite is far from a new band on the block, and it definitely shows through the vast amount of callbacks to classics and ridiculous levels of fun that’s to be had within “Ecstasy”.

“Ecstasy” releases on July 6th via Metal Blade Records!
