Ancestors – Suspended in Reflections

The world of doom metal/rock soaking in psychedelia is a wave of flavor that has been going for decades at this point in varying degrees of potency depending on the band. Recently, acts like Neurosis and Elder have fueled the latest generation of bands that come back to deliver to us an otherworldly experience that’s an amazing treat no matter what direction you look at it from. Although far from a new kid on the block, Ancestors have returned to us with their first album in six years and it couldn’t be more tantalizing.

With a cover art like that, you should expect something that’s trippy to no end while also brimming with a sense of adventure that allows for the band to not be confined by one sound for the entirety of the record. Ancestors have been true engineers of bringing trippy doom to light while still bringing in elements of psych rock and even some progressive flavors to enable their catalog to become as flavorful and interesting as it is, and it easily comes to a head with “Suspended in Reflections”. Reducing the line from five to three people might dampen the overall quality of the band’s sound is a fair way to approach it, but Ancestors doesn’t allow for fewer people to mean any less interesting of a sound. At first, there aren’t many different things going on within “Suspended in Reflections” that we haven’t already seen before. Upon closer inspection, we’re treated to the likes of dreamy and heavy soundscapes that are constantly shifting, vibes of jazz with the clear influence of prog in the guitars, ethereal vocals calling to you from another realm, and even an organ from an Aeolian-Skinner church with a staggering 1,941 pipes adorning this six-track wonder in ways very few things can. It all then comes together so that “Suspended in Reflections” becomes a truly multi-faceted album with many faces and many sounds the likes of which can and will grasp the attention of many fans of the niche sound instantly.

Rock and metal have by no mean any shortage of bands drenched in psychedelia as of late with acts like the Black Space Riders, Lurk, YOB, and the aforementioned Elder making headlines in their respective communities time and again. Now, it’s Ancestors’ turn to take the spotlight, and it couldn’t be done with a more perfect album than the sheer excellence that is “Suspended in Reflections”!

“Suspended in Reflections” releases on August 24th via Pelagic Records!
