There’s no shortage of Luciferian themes in the world of black metal, but I feel it’s not often enough that a band can take that concept and then proceed to actually make it sound great. Sure, you could sit there and argue it’s the performance itself and not the quality that matters, but it matters for me. It’s been a while since I’ve come across an exceptionally executed album of that vein of black metal, and the debut from Son ov Leviathan is exactly what I needed and I wish I found it sooner!

Black metal has long been associated with Satan, Luciferian beliefs, and such related topics for decades, and it’s not hard to see why, but it’s not as prevalent now as it was many years ago. Sure, those topics and ideas are still there, but it’s not as often made into a full album in my experience. So, the occasional surprise is more than welcome and Son ov Leviathan more than definitely fits the bill with the one-man act’s debut being no less than an intense ride through black hellfire with grand expertise allowing this record to become as great as it is. “Vi Veri Vniversum Vivus Vici” is a terrifying display of blackened death metal that’s performed with a fiery tenacity that could bring about the very end of all if given the chance, and with the brilliant instrumentation paired with the vicious approach to literally everything Son ov Leviathan truly hits the nail on the head at every turn. Toss in fantastically executed Satanic chants and a healthy amount of diversity amongst the tracks and “Vi Veri Vniversum Vivus Vici” comes together extremely well as each of these ten blasphemous tracks come as an onslaught, one wave after the next.

I truly wish I found this record earlier because it feels like a solid return to form for a black metal sound that knows how to be as blasphemous as Son ov Leviathan wants. There’s hardly any fault within the unholy glory that is “Vi Veri Vniversum Vivus Vici”, and if you’ve been craving some tantalizing blackened death metal that’s a real treat then look no further than this exceptional debut!
