Mesarthim – Coma Wall

There are very few things as satisfying in the world of music as much as consistency. No, I don’t mean consistency in terms of sound even though it can be very nice if done correctly. In this instance, I’m referring to quality. It feels so great to constantly come back time and again to a single act with each release offering something top-notch and entertaining to the very end. Mesarthim is a prime example of such, and the train that is their release schedule just keeps on pumping along.

It would seem that the duo behind the title of Mesarthim refers to certain selections of their releases as chapters given how the band put the tagline of “the end of this chapter” along with the announcement of their still-shiny new release of “Coma Wall”. Quick little EPs like these are always nice if you ask me as they are typically solid bursts that provide a peek at what’s going on in the minds that go into the band, and in the case of Mesarthim, it may mean the end of a particular approach. Maybe? I’m not quite sure if I’m to be honest. The brilliantly fashioned execution of cosmic black metal combined with electronic effects is something that Mesarthim has become synonymous with given their past while of releases, and the near-17-minute single-song offering that is “Coma Wall” brings it to a glorious peak. Sure, the sound is nothing that is new for Mesarthim at this point, but the sheer quality is undeniable like all their music yet it feels so much more powerful with “Coma Wall” somehow. It’s evocative. It’s interesting. It’s smashing from top to bottom. It has enough power to create supernovas and enough character to breathe life into every corner of the dark. It’s everything that Mesarthim has become renowned for and what has allowed them to become one of the modern giants of atmospheric black metal.

Whether or not “the end of this chapter” means moving on from electronic effects or bringing something new to the table to add to the already powerful mixture, I truly don’t know and I somehow don’t really care because I know that Mesarthim will be able to pull it off effortlessly. Extremely few bands have managed to reach such a cult status that constantly delivers the likes of which Mesarthim can, and releases like “Coma Wall” are what keep these Australians as one of the modern bands to know.
