If you follow the wondrous Relapse Records even just a little bit, you’ll notice that this year they’ve been dishing out several splits between many bands among their roster. Whether it’s to dish out some B-material or simply to keep the names of the bands on the lips of listeners, I’m not entirely sure but I could care less because it’s led to some great splits. Whether it be different acts like Iron Reagan and Gatecreeper joining forces or the upcoming combination between Primitive Man and Unearthly Trance, there really isn’t much to love from these splits.
Both of these bands put of two of the most punishing doom records of last year and caused quite the turmoil amongst the fan base as everyone seemed to have had their brains melted from the intensity that was twice brought to the table. While I’m more of a Primitive Man guy myself, I can still get behind what Unearthly Trance does, and the glory that goes on for these seven tracks are just the sort of thing that I’d come to expect. The entirety of this split is just a pure demonstration of pure devastation and chaos that only a planet wreathed in flame could replicate properly. The crunchy approach that Unearthly Trance takes molds seamlessly with the noise-infused doom black flame that Primitive Man dishes out to the point where every time Primitive Man releases another sonic onslaught, Unearthly Trance quickly follows up with an earth-shattering riff. These splits that Relapse has done have really brought out some of the best that I’ve seen from the respective bands, but it’s easily this mammoth pairing that has both the most talent and the most destructive power that we’ve seen so far on a scale like this, and it’s simply captivating.
With such power like being constantly thrown around without much care, it’s hard to imagine what levels of destruction these two bands aren’t capable of. Whether it’s the unbridled chaos that Primitive Man achieves or the methodical assault that Unearthly Trance executes, there’s plenty to enjoy with this split and has much to be desired from fans of both groups and beyond.
