God – God III – Holy Spirit

Being an instrumental act can really broaden the horizons that someone could possibly encapsulate even though sometimes it’s seen as limiting because there aren’t any vocals to help drive the music. But that’s far from the case if you’re an act that truly knows how to let the instruments speak volumes that a voice never could, and hearing a band get better and better at doing that with each album is a unique treat. When it comes to the act of God, I couldn’t say it any better.

I’m not a religious person myself, but I’ve always found the stories and such told within many scriptures to be nigh on interesting and seeing some of them translated into metal records can create something truly unique as metal and religion are typically seen as two different fronts on a battlefield. And like most if not every reincarnation of a religion in music, the lyrics can come under intense scrutiny for one reason or another, and that’s why I love God as a band so much because it’s all instrumental. There’s nothing to interpret as every moment is unique to each listener, and “God III – Holy Spirit” is easily the pinnacle of what this one-man band has created thus far. Each track is yet another call to some moral or some specific event that happens within the Bible, but for me the real beauty continues to lie in the instrumentation as God doesn’t shy away from making this proggy instrumental mass heavy at times, atmospheric at others, but never straying away from tremendous rhythms that weave through all thirteen tracks of “Holy Spirit”. All that combined with an indistinguishable grandeur that God has been honing since the debut two years ago, and we’re treated to a powerful concoction that’s equal parts heavy-handed and pleasing at the same time.

Everyone has the pleasure of keeping tabs on a few bands that we always come back to whenever those acts release new material. To see God increase in grandeur and skill in but two years across three albums is a treat that very few other bands have been able to deliver for me, and the glory that is “Holy Spirit” is but a testament to the talent behind this one-man band.
