Anything related to the world of punk music has long been something that I’ve always been interested in because I can really dig a raw attitude that wastes no time and is only here to destroy everyone and everything in sight. Yet, I’ve always gravitated towards the heavier end to where we start to go to the area of crossover thrash, but tonight I was set on finding some punk that I could really salivate over. With their debut full-length album, Trappist achieved just that.
It’s thanks to bands like Iron Reagan that I’ve really been able to get more and more into the realm of punk even if it’s only little by little, but without such a discovery I never would’ve discovered the craziness nor entered the beer-chugging party that Trappist has going 24/7 with the earth-shattering set of twenty-one tracks that they bring to the table with “Ancient Brewing Tactics”. Typically, I’m surprised to see more than twelve or thirteen songs on a single album, but Trappist keeps true to a great punk trope and brings use nearly double that, and they make each massive burst of energy worth your while. Trappist knows not only how to bring us a solid four minutes of raging riff one after another, they know how to do just that just under one minute while infusing chaos into every possible moment, making some tracks naught but madness, and then others containing enough power to boil stagnant water instantly and burn flesh. There is no such thing as downtime with “Ancient Brewing Tactics” and Trappist knows exactly how to make every moment overflowing with energy that can’t be quelled.
It’s these exact sort of things that can make a punk album feel so boring and just needlessly loud if it’s not done right, but Trappist knows the exact right proportions that make “Ancient Brewing Tactics” such a treat to jam out to at full blast. Punk is always a gamble when it comes down to overall quality, but Trappist manages to find the sweet spot to enable their debut full-length to become no less than an absolute winner.
