It has been quite a while since I dove into the world of metalcore by any standards simply because for a while it felt like there wasn’t anything interesting for me to find in the style. Yet, I wanted to go back into it at some point but I never knew where to go back to, so why not retread where I’ve been? That’s what I did with Every Hour Kills and they just happen to have a new album and it just so happens to be a good bit of what I was looking for.

For me, the two worlds of metalcore and djent haven’t always been places that I go to when looking for good music, but I’ve always respected them from top to bottom because some of the most interesting records that I’ve heard in the last few years have come from those styles. Every Hour Kills definitely caught my eye about three years ago, but it’s with this brand new EP that these Canadians really show us what they’re made of. With five tracks that merge core and djent into a very polished listening experience, “Fragile Machine” tackles the tasteful theme of what it means to be a human if consciousness can be put into a machine. Solid premise, but it’s the music that does the real talking (duh) as these five tracks display brilliance across the fretboard that keeps you reeled in, a solid set of clean vocals that work really well even when Every Hour Kills dares to bring in some growls even if it’s only for a few fleeting moments, and then the sheer musicianship of it all really allows “Fragile Machine” to come together really nicely in ways that I haven’t seen from metalcore in far too long.

This style has long been something that I can only take in small doses every so often, and I’m so happy that my latest taste of it has come yet again from Every Hour Kills simply because this band is only getting better with time and every moment of this EP is proof of that. “Fragile Machine” isn’t the best piece of metalcore or djent that I’ve heard, but it still gets two thumbs up from me and Every Hour Kills continues to have my vote of confidence.
