Moving forward as a death metal band can be incredibly tricky if you don’t do much to deviate from your original sound or try to bring something really new to the table in order to keep things fresh for both yourself as a musician and the fans as listeners. Yet, if you manage to have one foot steeped in tradition and the other knee-deep in passion to simply create something entertaining as a band, there’s little you can do wrong. With their upcoming record of scathing death, Monstrosity achieves just that.

If you’re going to not really shake up the formula with your particular approach to death metal, you need to make sure more than anything else that you’re at least trying to put some emotion and some passion into what you do because otherwise, it comes out feeling flat. While I don’t think Monstrosity really poured out their hearts and souls to create “The Passage of Existence”, you can really feel some of it in these twelve tracks as these guys know how to create death metal that’s perfect for what the genre has always been known for: unrelenting brutality. And if you’re going into “The Passage of Existence” expecting that then you will find nothing wrong with what this band has wrought. With each passing track, Monstrosity lays down one vicious riff followed by another ferocious display of power with a signature Florida death metal feel to it while still sounding modern, and that really allows Monstrosity to consistently impress. Their formula doesn’t really shift much throughout “The Passage of Existence”, but there’s no denying that Monstrosity does it incredibly well as you’re never found bored with whatever onslaught the band has decided to hurl your way and everything that is dished out from these twelve powerful tracks has something that every fan of death metal can latch onto and become enamored with.

Shaking up the formula can lead to your sound becoming much better and thus more people talking about your brand, but that’s a jump some bands simply don’t want to take and instead go for refining what they know to a razor’s edge. That’s precisely what Monstrosity has done and the proof is in the entirety that is “The Passage of Existence” as it leaves no room for error nor a chance for survival.
